CMI Level 3 Leadership - Emily Allen - AESSEAL

I really wanted to understand the principles of what makes a great leader to help me see what kind of leader I wanted to be.

What does your education/career journey to date look like?

After I finished my GCSE’s I went on to college to study Business, Financial Studies and Travel and Tourism as I wasn’t too sure what career I really wanted. After studying for 2 years and working at Home Bargains, I found an apprenticeship at AESSEAL for a Despatch Admin Apprentice where I studied Level 3 Business Administration.

AESSEAL gave me the opportunity to do many other courses whilst doing my apprenticeship, one of which being the CMI Level 3 Award in Principles of Management and Leadership with Whyy? Change.

Shortly after studying with Whyy? I passed my apprenticeship and was asked to become Despatch Lead, I now manage a team of 4 and work alongside our Stores Despatch department to help implement any changes to improve the business.

What skills were you looking to develop before starting your training course?

I really wanted to understand the principles of what makes a great leader to help me see what kind of leader I wanted to be. This was one of the subjects we went through, not only did I find this interesting but I have used it to help me manage my own team.

What is it like to study at Whyy? Change?

Studying at Whyy? Change is such a different experience to studying with any other provider. The tutors at Whyy? are all so knowledgeable in the subjects they are teaching and always have the time to answer questions no matter how daft they may be! Whyy? Change cater their teaching style to you as the learner, I found doing 1-1 sessions with Emma extremely useful so she would always offer to have 1-1 to go over anything we had just learnt or to go through any challenges I was facing at work.

How have you applied what you’ve learnt on your course at AESSEAL?

I have applied a lot of what I learnt at Whyy? at AESSEAL, I have learnt how to delegate to others and deal with any conflicts of interest. The key thing I took from my course was communication and how that is key to being a good leader and manager as well as how to communicate to different people in my team as each different personality needs managing differently.

Great tutors who really take their time to mentor you. Amazing experience!

What surprised you the most about Whyy? Change?

The main thing that surprised me the most was how enjoyable to course was! A lot of courses I have done are tutors talking and the learners listening which I find extremely boring and hard to learn from. At Whyy? the course is so interactive and fun because of how involved everyone is.

Would you recommend us to other businesses, if so, why?

100% yes! I think the work that Whyy? Change are doing is amazing and I think all businesses should have a good learning provider like them. The team at Whyy? have such a passion for wanting to teach others it really rubs off on every learner. I found if I was ever struggling with my course work the team at Whyy? would explain things in different ways to help me to understand better they would never push any of my questions to the side as they all want to see you thrive in your studies.
